01Airports

Blue Grass Airport

The airport is a medium‑sized regional hub served by Allegiant, American, Delta and United, offering daily nonstop flights to more than a dozen cities. It sits adjacent to Keeneland Race Course and only a few miles from downtown Lexington, making it a convenient gateway. Express Lextran buses run hourly from 6 AM to 6 PM, and all major car‑rental agencies, taxis and hotel shuttles are on site. International customs facilities exist, though no scheduled international carriers operate; most overseas travelers clear customs at a connecting airport.

Good to know

Rent a car for maximum flexibility, or use the hourly Lextran bus or a pre‑booked taxi if you arrive during service hours.

LESS GUESSWORK. MORE DISCOVERY.

A good day starts
with a little knowing.

Practical context for making these ideas your own.

01

How to Choose Your Stops

Start by matching your interests to the city’s core assets. The Blue Grass Airport gives immediate access to downtown and the Keeneland Race Course, making it a logical entry point. If you enjoy outdoor recreation, the Kentucky Horse Park Campground offers full‑hookup sites, pool, courts and weekend programs. Food lovers can sample the artistic vibe of Third Street Stuff & Coffee near Transylvania University or the Cajun flavors of Bourbon n' Toulouse on Euclid Avenue. History buffs will appreciate the Henry Clay estate, Ashland, which sits just off Richmond Road and is open to self‑guided visits. Use these categories—arrival logistics, outdoor stay, coffee break, dinner, and historic walk—to build a balanced list of stops.

02

A Flexible Visit Sequence

A suggested flow begins at Blue Grass Airport, where you can rent a car, hop on the hourly Lextran bus, or arrange a hotel shuttle. Head downtown for a quick coffee at Third Street Stuff & Coffee while you orient yourself around the university district. From there, drive north on New Circle Road to the Kentucky Horse Park Campground for an afternoon of recreation or a relaxed campsite dinner. Return toward the city center for an early evening meal at Bourbon n' Toulouse, enjoying its Cajun menu before the night winds down. End the day with a short walk or drive to Ashland, where the park’s quiet atmosphere offers a gentle historic close‑out. Adjust the order based on opening hours, traffic, or personal energy levels.

03

Practical Booking & Access Checks

Before you travel, confirm your car‑rental reservation and note the pickup location—airport or downtown office. Verify Lextran’s hourly bus schedule (6 AM‑6 PM) aligns with your arrival time; if you land after 6 PM, arrange a taxi at the airport stand. For the campground, reserve a site in advance, especially for summer weekends, and double‑check whether you need a full‑hookup, electric‑primitive or primitive spot. Check the opening hours of Third Street Stuff & Coffee and Bourbon n' Toulouse, and note any cash‑only policies. Finally, look up Ashland’s park hours and whether guided tours require a reservation or have limited slots.

04

Transportation Options and Trade‑offs

Lextran’s citywide bus runs every 35 minutes on mainlines during business hours and every 60 minutes off‑peak; fares are $1 and transfers are free for 90 minutes. This is the cheapest choice but may add waiting time, especially late at night. Taxis are plentiful at the airport and at Main & Upper Streets (6 PM‑6 AM); they provide door‑to‑door service at a higher cost and are best for late arrivals. Renting a car gives the most flexibility for reaching the campground, horse farms and Ashland, but you’ll need to navigate rush‑hour congestion on Nicholasley Road and pay for parking in downtown zones. Weigh cost, schedule and the distance between stops when picking your mode.

05

Traveler Trade‑offs to Consider

If budget is primary, rely on Lextran and walk where possible; you’ll save on car rentals and parking fees but must accept limited night service and slower travel between dispersed attractions. For time‑sensitive itineraries, a rental car or pre‑booked taxi eliminates bus wait times and lets you bypass downtown traffic by using New Circle Road, though you’ll incur fuel, insurance and possible rush‑hour delays near the University of Kentucky on game days. Camping adds a rustic experience and on‑site recreation but requires advance site selection and may limit evening dining options. Finally, consider personal comfort with driving in a city where lane reversals and traffic lights change dynamically; using a navigation app can mitigate confusion.
